Shorty & Doc $11.04 This CD reissue brings back a rare Swingville session that matches together the trumpets of Harold “Shorty” Baker and Doc Cheatham. At the time Baker, a veteran of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra, was much better-known and his soft tone and lyrical style often takes honors on this blowing date with pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer J.C. Heard. For Doc Cheatham, then 55 and (unknown to everyone) only at the halfway mark of his career, this was just his second opportunity to lead a record date, 11 years after an obscure session in France. The results of this meeting are generally quite friendly rather than combative with Cheatham’s Dixielandish phrasing sounding slightly old-fashioned next to Baker. They perform appealing swing-oriented material and sound fine in their many tradeoffs. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Adolphus Cheatham – Trumpet; Al Sears – Sax (Tenor); Bobby Donaldson – Drums; Doc Cheatham – Trumpet; Harold Baker – Trumpet; J.C. Heard – Drums; Leonard Gaskin – Bass; Lord Westbrook – Guitar; Mildred Anderson – Vocals; Robert Banks – Organ; Shorty Baker – Trumpet; Walter Bishop, Jr. – Piano; Wendell Marshall – Bass |

Shorty the Pimp $15.98 Shorty the Pimp was to have been a blaxploitation movie around 1973, but was never released due to various problems; supposedly, only one rough cut of the movie now exists, rumored to be in the hands of director Quentin Tarantino. This is the soundtrack album that would have accompanied the project, performed by journeyman Los Angeles soul band Don Julian & the Larks. The soundtrack was canceled along with the film, though most of this made it onto official releases (usually on the Money label). Released or not, this is damn rare stuff, and aside from its appeal for blaxploitation collectors, it’s pretty respectable early-’70s soul-funk on its own merits. Although this is heavily derivative of Superfly-era Curtis Mayfield (there’s even a parody called “Super Slick”) and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”-era Temptations in its marriage of accomplished harmonies, intricate guitar and horn arrangements, and street-smart lyrics, it’s well executed. On “Brother What It Is,” they get into some Rahsaan Roland Kirk-like flute and jazzy grooves, while “Just Tryin’ to Make It, Pts. 1 & 2″ is a slow-burn instrumental reminiscent of Booker & the MG’s doing “Summertime”; “I Love You” is a beautiful minor-key soul ballad with a cha cha feel. There are also covers of chart hits by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, the Staple Singers, and the like, since Don Julian & the Larks were to have played a lounge band in the movie itself. Some of these are superfluous, but some are more enjoyable than you’d expect; the version of “The Look of Love,” for instance, is smooth and spooky. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Shorty Featuring Georgie Fame $26.39 Though not too untypical for a Georgie Fame release, Shorty Featuring Georgie Fame has an odd place in the Fame discography. First, it was billed to a group, Shorty, with the words “Featuring Georgie Fame” printed in very small type beneath “Shorty” on the cover, with no picture of Fame (or, for that matter, Shorty) to be found anywhere in the artwork. Second, it was only released in the U.S., although Fame’s commercial profile, even at the time of its 1970 appearance, was considerably bigger in his native U.K. It was also recorded live (in a fairly small club judging by the sound of the applause), though no mention of this is made anywhere on the packaging, and in fact even the author of the Rev-Ola CD reissue’s fine liner notes remains unaware of the location. For all that, it’s not that unlike Fame’s other records from the era, and does prominently feature him as singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, even if he seemed almost to be hiding behind a group persona (à la David Bowie with Tin Machine many years later). If there’s anything to distinguish it from other Fame albums, it’s that the guitar sometimes has a more prominent role, and the songs sometimes stretch out in the manner that was fashionable in the psychedelic/hard rock era. That’s especially noticeable on the nearly six-minute opener, “Oliver’s Gone”; you don’t hear many Fame cuts with long blues-rock solos. Yet Fame’s customary attributes — assured jazz/R&B vocals and glowing organ — remain in place, and some tracks, like “Bluesology” and “Seventh Son,” are pretty much of a piece with his more straightforward mid-’60s work (though here Mose Allison’s “Parchman Farm,” which he’d recorded in September 1963 on his first live LP, is extended to seven minutes). Georgie gets more personal and introspective than usual, to good effect, on “Saskatchewan Sunrise” and “Inside Story,” while the 12-minute “Fully Booked” is especially epic by Fame standards. This isn’t the best or most representative Fame album, but one that should be heard by his fans, even if it doesn’t include his most outstanding material. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Georgie Fame – Keyboards, Vocals |
