Flamenco!

Flamenco!

$13.58

A strictly traditional flamenco record, Pepe Romero’s 1987 recording Flamenco! features not only his own sterling guitar work, but also singer Chano Lobato’s expressive vocals and, in an inspired touch that not enough flamenco artists have thought of, two genuine flamenco dancers, Maria Magdalena and Paco Romero. Flamenco, after all, is dance music, and as in some forms of English contra dancing, Appalachian clog dancing, and other forms of folk music, the percussive sound of the dancers’ shoes (and the female dancer’s traditional castanets) is intended as part of the music. As a result, Flamenco! has a vitality and excitement often missing from classical flamenco records, which can sometimes come off as a bit stuffy and overly serious. Lobato’s voice, a dusky alto with a beautifully controlled vibrato, suits the material perfectly, capturing the florid theatricality of flamenco music without going over the top. There are undoubtedly better flamenco records than this, but there are few that are as much fun. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Chano Lobato – Vocals; Pepe Romero – Guitar

Flamenco Rumba

Flamenco Rumba

Of course Energipsy will be compared endlessly to a band such as Gipsy Kings, but they have their own particular slant to this flamenco style, namely with a bit more rumba and hip-gyrating tempos. This is particularly heard on the lovely opening “Chica Bem,” which leader Francesco Grant presides over nicely, as well as on the mid-tempo groove oozing through “Mi Vida.” A tad tamer is the melodic and softer “Los Contreras,” that doesn’t quite pack the same oomph or punch as its predecessor. Other musicians that come to mind are Jesse Cook on the flamenco-propelled “Soy Liberal” featuring some fine playing, while “Magdalena” has a certain Los Lobos flair to it. When the band go strictly with instrumentals like “Joselito,” they are able to get their music and message across far easier than on some of the vocal-led numbers such as the rather garish cover of “Long Train Runnin’.” One instrumental that comes off as being too light has to be “Gipsea” which, although pretty in parts, lacks any sort of bite or energy despite the meticulous guitar solos. This energy comes in droves during the pleasing toe-tapper and hip-shaking “Yo Me Voy.” A different approach comes during “Ahora Tu” as a bolero-influenced method makes for another entertaining yet low-key song. Perhaps the biggest problem with the album is how Energipsy seem to travel down the same road too often, especially on the indifferent vocal effort of “Tamborea” with its synthesized accents. Thankfully they atone for this with an almost Spaghetti Western hue with the lovely and engaging “Mauresque.” However, the light Muzak that dominates “La Rueda de la Vida” reaches a new low on the record. Although very good in some spots, others should have been left off the album entirely. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi Performers: Gérard Pansanel – Slide Guitar; Carlos Benavent – Bass; Francesco Grant – Guitar; Frédéric Monino – Bass; Jean-Pierre Barda – Bass; Joel Allouche – Percussion; Jorge Pardo – Flute; José Luís Moreno – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Josè Mas Kitflus – Keyboards;

"This approach really works. It holds my student’s interest." These are typical comments on the effectiveness of William Bay’s Guitar Class Method. As no other instrument lends itself to so many moods and styles of music (blues, folk, rock, country, classical, flamenco, jazz, etc.), playing the guitar as a popular mode of expression and the instrument itself have become an integral part of American life. The Guitar Class Method was written with the hope it would expand the range of people of all ages who would be exposed to the guitar through a meaningful, authoritative method that is easy to follow.

Masters of Flamenco Guitar

$10.38

Masters of Flamenco Guitar is an excellent collection that showcases four masters of the art: Sabicas, Niño Ricardo, Manolo de Huelva, and Melchor de Marchena. Each guitarist is represented by a selection of live cuts that demonstrates his prodigious talent. Even casual listeners will be able to draw differences between each musician, since each has a unique style — Sabicas was both a songwriter and a player, Ricardo was often regarded as the finest accompanying guitarist in flamenco, de Huelva specialized in bulerías, and de Marchena was a gypsy accompanist. The beauty of Masters of Flamenco Guitar is how it allows even casual listeners to hear the differences between such styles, and as it does, it offers a good introduction to the entire genre. ~ Leo Stanley, Rovi Performers: Manolo de Huelva – Guitar; Melchor de Marchena – Guitar; Niño Ricardo – Guitar; Sabicas – Guitar

Flamenco Soul

Flamenco Soul

$12.78

If Pedro Cortes specialized in tango instead of flamenco, the Spanish guitarist would belong to the post-Astor Piazzolla world of tango instead of the pre-Piazzolla tango of the ’20s and ’30s. Nuevo flamenco (as opposed to traditional flamenco) is Cortes’ focus on Flamenco Soul, which combines flamenco with elements of jazz and funk as well as various forms of world music. Cortes does things that a flamenco purist would never do. A flamenco purist would never lead a band that employs someone on the Indian sitar, and a flamenco purist would not be heavily influenced by jazz (a type of music that was created in New Orleans — not Spain — in the late 19th century). But this 2002 release is captivating if you are a nuevo flamenco enthusiast and believe that flamenco needs to forge ahead and keep evolving. Over the years, flamenco has influenced various jazz artists — Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain went down in history as one of the best jazz albums of all time, and flamenco has been a big influence on Chick Corea and Al DiMeola. In fact, much of Flamenco Soul gives the impression that Cortes is well aware of Corea and DiMeola’s contributions to jazz (both inside and outside of Return to Forever). Flamenco Soul also shows a strong awareness of Arabic, Middle Eastern, and North African music; one of the instruments is the oud, a traditional Arabic lute. And that isn’t surprising because Arabic music has been influencing Spanish music for centuries; the influence of the Moors has never left Spain. What is surprising — pleasantly surprising — is Cortes’ use of a sitar player. India’s sitar is hardly a traditional flamenco instrument, but it serves Cortes well on this memorable and chance-taking CD. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Brazil – Ambience, Keyboards; DJ Free – Ambience, Keyboards; Pedro Cortes – Guitar

Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco

Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco

$12.78

“New flamenco” isn’t so much a revival of flamenco tradition as it is a melding of flamenco guitar with new age musical sensibilities. That means that while it’s still passionate and rhythmic, new flamenco is also a bit more polished and controlled, especially in terms of production. Its primary audience overlaps with contemporary instrumental and adult alternative listeners. Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco is an excellent introduction to the style, featuring many of its biggest names: Ottmar Liebert, Strunz & Farah, Jesse Cook, Govi, Young & Rollins, Lara & Reyes, and more. Some of the artists incorporate non-flamenco ethnic music into their compositions, while others lend a more meditative air to their still-emotional playing. Eclectic adult listeners may discover a new favorite style here. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Flamenco Fenomeno!

Flamenco Fenomeno!

$9.58

There are so many poor to middling flamenco records available that it can be daunting to choose one. However, Pepe Romero’s Flamenco Fenomeno! is simply what the title suggests, a breathtaking collection of solo guitar performances of traditional flamenco tunes that is both stunning in its virtuosity and compelling in the clear and powerful emotion conveyed in Romero’s playing. The technical quality of the performances is remarkable, with nary a missed note even during the most blindingly quick runs, but there’s a purity and simplicity to Romero’s playing as well. Many flamenco players tend to over-embellish their melodies with extraneous and distracting filigrees, but while Romero’s playing is suitably ornate, as befits flamenco music, he wisely lets the melodies speak for themselves. The remarkable thing is that Romero, who has since become one of the most respected flamenco guitarists in the world, was a 15-year-old sophomore at Hollywood High School in 1960 when these performances were recorded. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Pepe Romero – Flamenco Guitar, Guitar

An interesting group of flamenco musicians, Grupo Macarena actually hail from outside of Iberia. There are Germans and Turks as well as French and Spanish performers in the collective. Here, they show off something interesting in flamenco — both major regions of influence. The main vein of flamenco of course comes from Andalucia, with the stereotypical heart-rending songs and palmas. That’s represented with approximately half of the album here, and performed relatively well. The group’s specialty, though, is in flamenco from the Camargue — a rhumba flamenco from the south of France. This is the style made famous around the world by the Gipsy Kings, and indeed the lead singer here worked with them for some time prior to their rise on the world scene. The sound here is unmistakable, having the “fleet-footed” tempo and guitar work along with some intense vocals. For Andalucian flamenco, there are many better artists and albums out there, but for the Camargue, the only real competition to this album comes from the Gipsy Kings themselves (and perhaps Los Reyes). Worth a shot for the rarity and quality of the Camargue alone. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi Performers: Felipe Sauvageon – Percussion, Vocals, Guitar; José Amador – Guitar, Percussion
