Pure Mania $14.43 Were the Vibrators real punks? Maybe not, but then again, were the Stranglers? Or Eddie and the Hot Rods? Even more to the point, was Steve Jones? Plenty of rock careerists jumped onto the punk/new wave bandwagon in the wake of the Sex Pistols’ success (and more than a few folks, like Jones, stumbled into the new movement by accident), but unlike most of them, the Vibrators took to the fast/loud/stripped down thing like ducks to water, and both Knox (aka Ian Carnarchan) and Pat Collier had a genius for writing short, punchy songs with sneering melody lines and gutsy guitar breaks. If the Vibrators were into punk as a musical rather than a sociopolitical movement, it’s obvious that they liked the music very much, and on that level their debut album stands the test of time quite well. Pure Mania boasts a bit more polish (and less politics) than many of the albums from punk’s first graduating class (such as Damned Damned Damned or The Clash), but if you’re looking for a strong, satisfying shot of chugging four-square punk, cue up “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” “No Heart,” “Petrol,” or “Wrecked on You” and you’ll be thrown into a gleeful pogo frenzy. Maybe Pure Mania isn’t purist’s punk, but it’s pure rock & roll, and there’s nothing wrong with that. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Persecution Mania $12.79 Sodom’s landmark Persecution Mania stands at the very crossroads of thrash and death metal. A virtual tour de force of blinding speed and blunt force, it is also arguably the best album of Sodom’s checkered career. Recorded shortly after the arrival of guitarist extraordinaire Frank Blackfire, Persecution Mania took the group’s fast-as-can-be, subtlety-free, roast-every-bridge approach to a whole new level of intensity and power. With their brazen ferocity and single-minded velocity, face-ripping moshers like “Nuclear Winter,” “Outbreak of Evil,” and the title track may have seemed a bit one-dimensional to older metal heads at the time (though these were accorded a fitting cover of Motörhead’s seminal “Iron Fist”), but it played right into the hands of the genre’s ever-growing contingent of younger, more extreme fans. Even at 13 tracks, the album is so deep that the absolute classic “Sodomy and Lust” only arrives at number 11 — now that is value for your buck. When combined with similarly audacious and controversial nuggets like “Christ Passion” and “Conjuration,” there is little doubt that Persecution Mania would have made the P.M.R.C.’s most-wanted list had it been released a few years earlier. Curiously, much of the music captured here recalls the parallel advancements of fellow proto-deathsters Sepultura, with whom Sodom endured a nervously respectful relationship. So it is interesting to note how the Brazilians used these developments as a springboard to altogether greater achievements, while, for Sodom, this would be its finest hour. Weasel Mania $6.38 Ben Weasel’s eulogy to his own band is — of course — built equally of cynical jibes, bruised geek entitlement, and a little bit of genuine pride. “Everything was a hassle,” he writes of Screeching Weasel’s tenure in the liners of Weasel Mania. “A lot of the fans were pricks and the mood in the van ranged from cartoonish therapy group for mental defectives to crank-fueled hockey fight, but somehow it managed to pretty fun. It’s amazing what you can tolerate with youth on your side.” With Weasel’s acerbic wit and a sizable Ramones fetish as their guiding factors, Screeching Weasel tried to bring some laughs and energy back to a too-serious scene. They didn’t always get it right, as Weasel Mania proves. But as it skips across the band’s output since the baiting 1988 anthem “Hey Suburbia,” it’s clear that even when the songs were only rudimentary or the jokes fell more than flat, Screeching Weasel stuck brazenly to their guns. The My Brain Hurts material — “Cindy’s on Methadone,” “What We Hate,” “Science of Myth,” and the title track — endure as scrappy pop-punk classics, angsty, peppy diagrams for a thousand Simple Plans since. “Science of Myth” in particular is a Ben Weasel classic, his overcompensating yell exploding in rapid-fire youth apathy as Danny Vapid fills in the razor guitar and Mike Mills-style backing vocals. The set includes the Wiggle era’s shamelessly lowest common denominator Ramones romp “Jeannie’s Got a Problem with Her Uterus,” the Green Day answer song “I Wrote Holden Caulfield,” and “Phasers on Kill” and the more effective Ramones romp “Cool Kids,” both from 1996′s Bark Like a Dog. Weasel Mania isn’t the sort of thing you listen to in one setting. “The scene is dumb,” “the kids are dumb,” “getting old is dumb,” “the Ramones and the Queers rule” — their perpetual themes just don’t hold up. But Weasel’s endearing for that same tenacious lethargy. You either love them or you hate them, and sometimes it seems like they’re hoping for the latter. Ramones Mania $11.18 Ramones Mania is a relentless collection of 30 tracks from the Ramones’ first ten albums, ranging from the classic Ramones to the less-than-classic Halfway to Sanity. Mouse-A-Mania $14.99 The younger generation of hardcore fans may grind their teeth, but unfortunately market considerations rule, and Eek-A-Mouse admirers should really be grateful that the RAS label continues to make much of his back catalog available. And so, even though it wasn’t economically viable to keep both the Assassinator and King & I albums on the shelves, most of the sets are found here in one convenient set. The two were very different albums. Assassinator was a thoroughly Jamaican album, overseen by Anthony and Ronald Welch and backed by the Roots Radics; King & I took the Mouse to London, where producer Cliff Carnegie nudged him toward a more crossover sound. However, the arrangement and production vagaries are less pronounced than the tone of the two sets. Assassinator was a decidedly downbeat affair, a melancholy survey of society, heavy with cultural numbers; in contrast, King was brighter and boasted a clutch of love songs. Mouse-A-Mania emphasizes these divisions, yet by intermixing the tracks creates an arguably more satisfying whole than its independent parts. Thus, RAS gives listeners the complete Mouse, encompassing the silly, the serious, the lover man, the party rat, and the personal. The cultural numbers are particularly strong, with “Gun Shot a Cry” and “Assassinator” of special note among a string of excellent numbers, but who could imagine the soulful depths of emotion hidden in the rodent’s heart, now laid bare on “De Di Doo” and “Now I Know”?
