Child Guitar

Right handed people should learn to play left handed guitar

Parents, this is very important information for you to consider should your child be showing an interest in learning to play guitar. This may challenge some of your beliefs or views but is very important to know and take into account in this situation.

20th Century dictionaries define a guitar as “a stringed instrument played by strumming.”

Today, the guitar can no longer be defined in this way, as the way of playing guitar has changed dramatically. From about the middle of the 20th Century “playing guitar” has evolved tremendously and has long since ceased to be an instrument “played by strumming.”

The most major influence in the evolution was the invention of the electric guitar, and amplification.

These were new things, never before known or experienced. Players of the 1950′s took these two things and tried new things, experimenting with and adding upon earlier efforts and ideas and subsequent generations took these ideas further. 50 years later, what it means to play the guitar is a whole different thing.

If you think about it, before electric guitars and amps, how could anyone play a guitar any other way than “by strumming?”

But that is where the dictionary definition still dates from.

In the early days of electric guitar (1920′s and 1930′s), electric guitars were really just glorified acoustic guitars with microphones. They were still played and treated as if they were acoustic guitars, except now they had some help with sound output via the microphone. That was all new for those guys!

Since the guitar was only an “instrument played by strumming” it worked that the right hand did the work of strumming the guitar, and the left hand did the chords and fingering. The theory was that the “strong” arm of the player (the majority being right handed) would be the one to keep the rhythm and keep time. Left hand technique in those days was limited to doing finger-chords.

Today, that simple view of playing guitar is as outdated and as black and white television!

So, what are we talking about here?

Since the 1950′s and especially in the 1960′s three major technological advances happened:

1)      The invention of the solid body electric guitar. Solid body electric guitars such as the Fender Telecaster, and the Gibson Les Paul could not be played and heard without an amplifier. No amp = no sound. To work with an amplifier required brand new skills of guitarists.

2)      Advances in amplification were required, and were quickly invented or further improved in order to cope with the necessary volumes required for larger crowds, and larger concerts and festivals. Advances in amplification gave way to new discoveries and uses of the guitar in combination with the amp, such as feedback, sustain, overdrive and distortion. Higher volumes enabled new things to be possible, and new skills for the guitarist to learn.

3)      Experimentation with sound processing lead to the creation of “sound effects” built into effects pedals, such as “wah wah”, “delay”, “echo”, “tremolo”, “phaser”, “flanger”, “compression”, etc. This turned the guitar into an instrument that was now capable, through effects, of producing all new sounds, never even envisioned before. More skills to learn.

With these material and technological advances came the corresponding new wave of guitarists who were the first to use and experiment with these new things.

From the 1950′s to the 1970′s came the first of the “guitar greats” such as Chuck Berry, Duane Alman, Alvin Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Keith Richard, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Gary Rossington, Dave Gilmour, Steve Jones, Gary Moore, Robert Frip and many, many more.

These pioneers of Advanced Guitar playing were able to discover and make the guitar do more (or in some cases less) than it had ever been required to “do” before.

And then there was “lead guitar” – essential the playing of scales. No strumming there! Now bands had “lead guitarists” as well as “rhythm guitarists.” New title, new duties, new skills.

When American guitarist Eddie Van Halen came on the scene with the song “Eruption” in 1978, a whole new world opened up for guitarists. New techniques such as “finger tapping” came to be. Now people used TWO HANDS on the fret board! What? Playing it like a piano?

The 1980′s gave way to a whole new wave of highly-skilled, impressive guitar players, playing the guitar in ways never played before. People like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Jake-E-Lee, The Edge, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, George Benson, Robert Smith, and thousands more guitarists took Guitar Playing to levels even higher than those laid out by the guitar greats from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s.

During this same time in the 1980′s the “whammy bar” took on a new life. Floyd Rose and Kahler were two companies that came up with floating tremolo systems that allowed new and more extreme whammy bar techniques without driving the guitar hopelessly out of tune, which was always the problem with tremolo enabled guitar bridges before. Problem solved = new possibilities, yet again!

By the time the 1990′s came about, playing guitar was so far above what it meant to play guitar in the pre-electric guitar era that the two concepts had become almost like chalk and cheese.

The guitar was no longer a “strumming instrument” and hadn’t been for a good few generations of players!

Today, we need to have a fresh and contemporary look at how best people should learn to play guitar. Parents take note.

To become a good guitarist, by today’s standards a right handed person needs to learn how to play guitar on a left handed guitar.

This means that the right handed person’s “strong” hand should be the one on the fretboard.

This is in direct contrast to the “traditional” teachings that the “strong hand” strums the guitar (and keeps time.) If you want to dazzle people with you skills and play up and down the fret board like a Guitar God, why would you put your “weak” hand to the hardest task? It’s your “strong hand” that should be on the fret board doing the “work.”

To make this very clear: Your “strong” hand needs to be the one on the fretboard. For a right handed person, that is your right hand. For a left handed person it is their left hand. Your “weak” hand should be the one that holds the plectrum. Your “strong” hand is the one that will be doing all the “work” if one is to play guitar the way it is played today.

There is some proof of this one can look at. Look up the really great guitar heroes and take a look at how many of them are actually left handed people who play guitar right handed.

The opposite to that would be right handed people who play guitar left handed.

Right handed people need to learn to play guitar left handed if they want to become what we consider a “good guitarist” today.

Remember, we are all living in the 21st Century and what it means to “play guitar” is not what it was in the prehistoric times of the 20th Century.

Parents: when your son or daughter shows interest in playing guitar do not show them how they should hold it. Get them to show you how they want to hold it, how they envision playing guitar would be for them. You will be very surprised at what you see, especially if they have heard any of your old 70′s and 80′s records before!

And do not be put off my commission-based, agenda-ridden music store salesmen who try to feed you with lies about “it’s better to just learn to play a right handed guitar” just because that is all they have in their store and they won’t make a sale on a left handed guitar.

For left handed electric guitars the best guitar brand to consider is Gaskell Guitars. Gaskell makes left handed guitars only. There is no problem getting left handed guitars. Anyone saying that to you has an agenda.  Parents, be aware of these, be smart, and do what is best for your child. They may be a future guitar god! Who knows?

With the release of such old-school Pentagram compilations as 2002′s First Daze Here and 2006′s First Daze Here Too, most fans of the Virginia cult metal band would assume that the vaults have been completely cleared out. But this didn’t prove to be the case, as evidenced by Bedemon’s Child of Darkness. Led by Pentagram’s brief second guitarist, Randy Palmer, Bedemon also featured Pentagram co-founders Bobby Liebling and Geof O’Keefe. As a result, both bands possessed a very similar Sabbath-y sound, although Bedemon seemed to focus more on the Satanic side of things — even more so than Pentagram. The sound quality of this 15-track release may not be exactly sonically sterling, but for longtime Pentagram fanatics, it will be quite a find, as the material is on par with both the aforementioned Pentagram compilations. Just by glancing at the song titles alone (“Enslaver of Humanity,” “Serpent Venom,” “Into the Grave,” “Through the Gates of Hell”) you see that Palmer and company were following the same lyrical path as acts like Venom and Slayer; only thing is that Bedemon pre-dated both acts by ten years. Also included is a hefty booklet, jam-packed with pictures, informative notes, recollections (Palmer passed away in 2002), and song lyrics. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Bobby Liebling – Guitar, Bass, Vocals; Geof O’Keefe – Guitar (Rhythm), Drums, Guitar; Mike Matthews – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar, Bass; Randy Palmer – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar, Bass

Billy Joe Shaver is a man who has long known more than a little about hard times, and he was certainly put to the test between 1999 and 2001 — his wife and mother succumbed to cancer; his son and musical collaborator, Eddy Shaver, died of a drug overdose; and he came face to face with his own mortality after suffering a heart attack on-stage while touring behind his final album with Eddy, The Earth Rolls On. Combine all this with the national malaise which struck America in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and it seems appropriate that Freedom’s Child, Billy Joe Shaver’s 13th album, released in the fall of 2002, eases back on the flinty country-rock he crafted with his son and aims for a quieter, more traditional approach and a contemplative tone. On Freedom’s Child, Shaver’s thoughts often turn to family, relationships, and home, and whether he’s thinking back on a rugged but happy childhood (“Wild Cow Gravy”), the hometown he left behind (“Corsicana Daily Sun”), relationships that didn’t quite work out (“We”), and one that might just pan out yet (“Hold on to Yours [And I'll Hold on to Mine]“), he sounds sentimental without being cloying, with just enough grit to make it clear it’s the hard-won little victories that often make the difference. The less-explicitly self-referential songs, most notably “Honey Chile” and “Day by Day,” prove that Shaver is still a master storyteller, and if the playful patriotism of “Good Ol’ U.S.A.” is just a mite overplayed, the blunt realities of “That’s Why the Man in Black Sings the Blues” serve as a balance. (And “That’s What She Said Last Night” is on hand to prove that Shaver still has plenty of rowdy roadhouse stomp left in him.) The primarily acoustic arrangements of Freedom’s Child put the emphasis squarely on Billy Joe Shaver and his songs, and the gruff warmth of his delivery and the honest emotional heft of his lyrics are more than strong enough to carry the burden; it’s a fine and moving album from one of country’s least-appreciated major talents. [The CD version of Freedom's Child also includes as a bonus an unreleased performance from the late Eddy Shaver, a solo blues workout called "Neccessary Evil."] ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Will Kimbrough – Guitar (12 String Acoustic), Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Baritone); Billy Ray Reynolds – Vocals (Background); Chris Carmichael – Fiddle; David Roe – Bass (Electric), Bass (Acoustic); Keith Christopher – Bass (Electric), Vocals (Background), Guitar (Electric);

Child in Time

Deep Purple fans were outraged, Heavy Metallurgists ran shrieking for cover. But Ian Gillan’s first post-Purple project remains one of the hardest, loudest and most exciting of all the mothership’s myriad offspring — and the fact that Child in Time is such a brutally funky album only amplifies its achievements. How easy it would have been, after all, for Gillan to simply fall back on all the past glories that his audience was hoping he’d be replaying. Instead, even the album’s title — lifted, of course, from one of Purple’s most sacred classics — was a joke. “Child in Time” was replayed within, of course. But you’d have a hard time recognizing it. It’s strange — looking back on the Deep Purple story, it’s the arrival of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes that heralds the band’s own flirtation with da funk, and the departure of Gillan and Roger Glover (the latter producer of this album) that allowed them into the family in the first place. You’d never guess that from Child in Time, though, as it bounds turbulently from the full-on crunch of “Lay Me Down,” through the Sly Stone-ish “You Make Me Feel So Good,” and onto the aforementioned “Child in Time,” drawn across a luxurious quiet storm landscape, and squeezing an almost heartbreaking guitar solo out of Ray Fenwick. Other versions of “Child in Time” are louder, harder, more powerful. But this remains the most emotional — and that’s what the song has always demanded. The album’s other epic is “Let It Slide” — apparently a song about premature ejaculation, that contrarily slides on for eleven-plus minutes. Deeply atmospheric, lighter-wavingly anthemic, it’s a more a showcase for the band than its singer, confirming both the democracy of this new group and going some way towards explaining the “jazz-rock” label that Child in Time is frequently saddled with. In fact, the album as a whole has more in common with the infusion of funk that was leaking into roughly simultaneous releases by Thin Lizzy (“Dancing in the Moonlight”), T. Rex, and bandmembers Fenwick and John Gustafson’s recent past with Fancy and Roxy Music respectively — not to mention Purple’s own Come Taste the Band. But, if purebred, punchy R&B be your poison, Child in Time wipes the floor with the lot of them.~ Dave Thompson, Rovi Performers: Mike Moran – Arp 2600, Arp Strings, Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Organ (Hammond), Keyboards; Roger Glover – Arp 2600, Kalimba, Vocals, Synthesizer; Mark Nauseef – Tubular Bells, Temple Blocks, Roto Toms, Bell Tree, Water Gong, Flexatones, Shaker, Finger Cymbals, Agogo, Darbouka, Claves, Triangle, Cabasa, Gong, Bells, Marimba, Bongos, Drums (Steel), Conga, Drums, Percussion; Ian Gillan -

When you count up the years and numbers, few if any authentic jazz guitarists have sustained as long, consistent, fruitful or interesting a recording career as Ponder. His many efforts for the Muse and High Note labels have set high standards for musicality with integrity, and this recording leaves no doubt as to his continued excellence. This is as diverse a jazz recording, leaving pop trappings completely aside, as Ponder has ever conceived. He does great modern jazz works such as a picture-perfect read of Woody Shaw’s mainstream classic “Moontrane,” the Victor Feldman/Miles Davis hard bop evergreen “Seven Steps to Heaven,” replete with a witty off minor repeated lead chorus, and his second attempt (first done on Something to Ponder) for the cerebral Pharoah Sanders modal circular incantation, a near ten minute take of “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” For someone closely identified as a good ol’ soul-jazz plectrist, longtime fans will be pleased about the opening track “Kickin’ Da Bobo,” a reference to prison slang. There’s a Latin variation of the usually balladic “Wild Is the Wind,” a main version and reprise of Ponder’s poignant “Somebody’s Child,” and pianist Sonny Barbato leading, with Ponder’s rhythm guitar setting up Bill Lee’s cute “Who Will Be the One?” from a film of son Spike Lee. There’s a Brazilian flavored guitar duo, more ballads including the beautiful standard “Too Late Now,” three different drummers including producer George Heid and Cleveland’s Greg Bandy roiling rhythms during “Creator,” and Ponder’s fluid, dynamic guitar leading his group of fellow Pittsburghians all the way. While those quite familiar with Ponder should enjoy the broad-based approach of this recording from top to bottom, even they could be surprised how thoroughly enjoyable this date is. ~ Michael G. The folks at the German Buffalo Bop label have been digging up superb rockabilly rarities for so long it’s a wonder there are any left to reissue, but thankfully their well hasn’t run dry yet, and Problem Child delivers 30 more obscure rockin’ sides for fans of first-era rock. While some of Buffalo Bop’s compilations are thematic, this one seems to strain to follow the format of kids getting wild (not exactly a rare subject in rockabilly), but given the consistent strength of the music, no one is likely to care. Highlights include Johnny Kay’s swinging tale of hard times on “Starvation,” Eddie Ferrell’s faux-Elvis mover “Teach Me How to Rock,” Franky Preston’s lascivious “I Want to Do It,” a solid hillbilly boogie from Billy Hall called “Move Over Rover,” Ronnie Brent’s high-energy “My Sweet Verlene,” a hilarious tribute to “Green Stamps” from Freddie Flynn & the Flashes, and Marv Blihovde’s fiery “Been Away Too Long.” Ira Allen’s “Nursery Rock” boasts some excellent guitar work even if the lyrics are silly, and fans of rock’s outer limits may be intrigued by the presence of two tracks by Ramsey Kearney (including the red hot “The Cat Bug Bit”), who later worked in the song-poem business and became John Trubee’s unwitting collaborator on the famous prank tune “A Blind Man’s Penis.” This is top-notch stuff for fans of classic rockabilly, and as usual, Buffalo Bop’s audio transfers and mastering are first-rate, making Problem Child a real value for the money. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Al Reed – Vocals; Frankie Mann – Vocals

Magic Is a Child

Magic Is a Child

$22.39

Magic Is a Child was released in 1977, the debut for new Nektar guitarist Dave Nelson. Carrying on, though, from where their last set left off, Nektar’s fascination with shorter, punchier songs continued unabated, even while the keyboards continued to swell and the guitars shifted ever more toward the symphonic. Nektar’s brightening vistas were new, however, and a fatal flaw as far as their fans were concerned. They didn’t want breezy pop, and breezy pop fans didn’t want Nektar, while the band’s new label, Polydor, apparently didn’t care either way. The art department did spring for the 13-year-old Brooke Shields to appear on the front cover, but that was it in terms of promotion. Thematically, too, little about Magic Is a Child recalls Nektar’s days as prog darlings. The opening “Away from Asgard” is a fine slab of Norse storytelling, tied into the vast dark forests of northern Germany (where the band was still based), while “Midnight Light” also has a romantic Germanic tinge, as it eulogizes the village of Seeheimut. “Love to Share,” in contrast, is an unabashed Beatles tribute, riddled with affectionate borrowings and an oddly effective backward drum, while “On the Run (The Trucker)” still sounds like a slice of AOR radio filler. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi Performers: Anthony Posk – Strings; Julien Barber – Strings; Kermit Moore – Strings; Michael Commins – Strings; Allan Freeman – Keyboards; Dave Nelson – Vocals, Guitar; Derek Moore – Bass, Vocals; Larry Fast – Synthesizer; Mo Moore – Vocals, Bass; Ron Howden –

Century Child

Century Child

$14.39

Possibly the biggest success story in the history of Finnish heavy metal, Nightwish celebrated their second chart-topping album in their homeland with 2002′s Century Child, which eventually collected numerous awards and went double platinum (60,000 units in Finland) within a year of release. The group’s fourth LP overall, Century Child wisely repeated its predecessors’ winning characteristics: symphony-enhanced power metal laced with accessible pop sensibilities (mostly straightforward song structures and romantic lyrics), distinguished by the operatic voice of classically trained singer Tarja Turunen. Undoubtedly the key to Nightwish’s remarkable success (and since, hugely influential on countless followers like After Forever and Epica), Turunen is actually more restrained in her delivery than one might expect, rarely belting her way overboard in an effort to match the metallic aggression of opening shots “Bless the Child” and “End of All Hope.” Never losing momentum, she duets with bassist Marco Hietala on “Dead to the World,” returns to center stage on the platinum-selling single “Ever Dream” (which combines the group’s commercial attributes to perfection), and leads the band towards commercial apotheosis on the gentle ballad “Forever Yours,” which could fit perfectly well in any pop diva’s catalog. “Slaying the Dreamer” and “Ocean Soul” resume the power metal with strings and choirs motif, and “Feel for You” curiously appears to draw its eerie riffs and strings from the theme of the Halloween movies! And before they embark on the album’s final, ten-minute, three-part magnum opus, “Beauty of the Beast,” Nightwish take a very competent stab at “The Phantom of the Opera” — no, not the Iron Maiden classic, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical’s title track. Which makes for an interesting tidbit when considering this album’s appeal: fans of more aggressive heavy metal might find it simply too saccharine for the palate, but those with an affinity for straightforward rock and pop will not only eat it up, but ask for seconds. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi Performers: Tapio “Mongo” Aaltonen – Orchestral Percussion; Kristina Ilmonen – Tin Whistle; GME Choir – Choir, Chorus; Emppu Vuorinen – Guitar; Jukka Nevalainen – Percussion, Drums; Marco Hietala – Vocals, Bass; Steve Hardwick – Voices, Vocals; Tarja Turunen –

Perhaps the funkiest album of Herbie Hancock’s early- to mid-’70s jazz/funk/fusion era, Man-Child starts off with the unforgettable “Hang Up Your Hang Ups,” and the beat just keeps coming until the album’s end. “Sun Touch” and “Bubbles” are slower, but funky nonetheless. Hancock is the star on his arsenal of keyboards, but guitarist Wah Wah Watson’s presence is what puts a new sheen on this recording, distinguishing it from its predecessors, Head Hunters and Thrust. Others among the all-star cast of soloists and accompanists include Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Stevie Wonder on chromatic harmonica, and longtime Hancock cohort Bennie Maupin on an arsenal of woodwinds. ~ Jim Newsom, Rovi Performers: Herbie Hancock – Arp Odyssey, Arp Pro Soloist, Oberheim, Synthesizer Strings, Arp, Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, Keyboards, Vocals, Piano (Electric), Synthesizer, Piano; Bennie Maupin – Saxello, Wind, Clarinet (Bass), Flute (Bass), Flute (Alto), Flute, Percussion, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Dick Hyde – Tuba, Trombone (Bass); Stevie Wonder – Harmonica; Bill Summers – Percussion; Bud Brisbois – Trumpet; David T. If you’re talking about packaging, the flaws of this disc are considerable. Comprised of 14 songs from 1960-1990 (most from 1960-71), the unifying theme is that all of them are taking from Houston recording sessions. But while recording dates and some personnel are noted, the original labels and dates of release are not. Furthermore, although the liner notes give a reasonable overview of Copeland’s career, the tracks on this specific compilation are not discussed. And, putting the boot in, the cuts are not sequenced chronologically, but arranged almost as if someone had pressed the random button on a CD remote. Now, having aired all those complaints, the music is very good. These are fiery, committed performances in which the songs and arrangements often veer as much toward soul as toward blues. That’s something that works to Copeland’s advantage, both because he was versatile enough to combine styles well, and because it made him stand out from legions of other journeymen bluesmen. The 1960-71 material is particularly fine for its raw and unusual qualities. 1971′s “Ghetto Child,” for instance, has a searing wobbly organ that sounds like it was lifted from a warped Animals record, and its flip side, “Soul Power,” has respectable funk rock influences. The 1963-64 cuts benefit from some Bobby “Blue” Bland-quality horn parts, and “May the Best Man Win” has some great unexpected descending chord changes, set to a Latin-esque beat. The later performances may not be as striking, yet these too are quite respectable, and 1984′s “Daily Bread” is uncommonly (for Copeland) somber, unplugged gutbucket blues. If Copeland’s winding discography is ever broken up into logically sequenced compilations covering different phases of his career (which seems highly unlikely), this ragtag job might be rendered redundant. But if you can live with its patchy assembly, it’s highly recommended on pure musical grounds. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Connie Mack Booker – Piano; Curtis Mitchell – Trumpet; Harold Bennett – Sax (Tenor); John Manning – Sax (Tenor); Johnny Copeland – Vocals, Guitar; Ronnie Barron – Piano

Winter Child

Winter Child

$10.38

Most artists try to hook an audience with strong material at the beginning of an album, hoping listeners will stick around through a relatively flat middle section before ascending again to leave a good final impression. Matt Duke, however, seems to favor an alternative approach. The first five tracks of Winter Child are quite ordinary, with nothing in the writing, singing, or arrangements to distinguish them from thousands of other singer/songwriters hopefully touting their wares. Then, just as you lose heart, comes “One Small Bird.” It’s a song that wears its vulnerability broadly on its sleeve, but for that very reason it remains endearing. After that, “Listen to Your Window” brings in a neat atonality to shake things up, and the title cut feels like real energy was expended — there’s a kick of passion about it. It’s not all smooth sailing from there — “Ballroom Dancing” is a bit of a yawn, but the wonderfully titled “Taxidermy & the Skiffle Explosion” draws its guitar playing from the Bert Jansch fake book tempered by Windham Hill (and quite neatly, too, although the piano and voices are a touch of overkill), making for a tasty instrumental. There’s a languid quality about the closer, “To Whom It May Concern,” that’s appealing, too. So it’s not a great album — there’s too much filler. But it would make a superb EP, and it’s worth sticking around for the extra track, too. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi Performers: Matt Duke – Electronics, Keyboards, Percussion, Piano, Vocals; Andrew Keenan – Pedal Steel; Brad Roberts – Vocals (Background); David Mansfield – Viola, Violin; Deborah Assael – Cello; Lucy Roche – Vocals (Background); Marshall Crenshaw – Vocals (Background); Rob Morsberger – Vocals (Background), Accordion, Keyboards;

Moonshine Willy’s jagged bluegrass-rock is one of the best things to come out of the roots-rock revival of the ’90s. Bandleader Kim Docter’s distinctly un-traditional vocals and savagely cynical lyrics create a unique tension between country twang and big city sneer. Who else could make the Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me” sound like it was always a country tune? ~ Tim Sheridan, Rovi Performers: Mike Urschel – Banjo; Chris Ganey – Drums; Jerry Soto – Keyboards, Guitar; Kim Docter – Vocals

Popular soul crooner Charles Wilson follows up his successful Delmark label CD If Hearts Were Nickels with this first effort for Severn Records, showcasing his smooth-as-glass voice with a big band and strings. More commercially oriented but retaining a retro style, Wilson sounds like the seasoned veteran he is, with the horns adding class to the proceedings while the strings tastefully avoid dominating the backdrop, all arranged by the legendary Willie Henderson. As the nephew of Little Milton, Wilson cannot help but sound very much like him, but also is a parallel to many other Stax, Motown, and Philly soul singers of yesteryear. If you are a fan of Joe Tex, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, or his hero Tyrone Davis, you’ll easily enjoy Wilson. Young Monster Mike Welch adds his expertise on the electric guitar, as does the versatile keyboardist Benjie Porecki, and bass guitarist/songwriter Steve Gomes. Wilson does not write any of these tunes, but taps from a wide array of songsmiths well-known in and out of traditional rhythm & blues. Denise LaSalle’s tribute to Milton, “Somebody’s Tears,” is the closest track to pure, downhearted blues with Porecki’s organ setting the reflective pace, the title track is rendered in a vexed, wah-wah Mayfield/Superfly style, and “I Don’t Want to Take a Chance” really brings home the time capsule retro sound of Davis Ă  la his huge hit “Turn Back the Hands of Time.” Gomes contributes three songs; the much slower soul tune “Someone Must Have Taught You,” the funkiest track “Put Something into It,” with a typical bassline Ă  la the Eddie Harris soul-jazz icon “Listen Here,” and the upbeat “I Want to Shout About It,” elevated in pace and hope by Wilson’s confident singing and the instrumental complement. It might be surprising for Bob Marley fans to hear a version of “Is This Love?,” but it always made for a more pure soul tune than reggae, as rendered here in a bluesier vein. With a certain level of sophistication and a refined approach more interested in basics than shouting out, Charles Wilson delivers a learned, professional approach to contemporary R&B. It’s a easily accessible style, always firmly grounded in tried-and-true proven formulas that brought the music to the world in the first place. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Benjie Porecki – Wurlitzer, Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond); Calley Bliss – Vocals (Background); Daphene Benichou – Viola; Karla Chisholm – Vocals (Background); Kenny Rittenhouse – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Kevin Burns
