Guitar Kit Build Your Own

Not only would your speed increase, but your ability to improvise and your confidence to learn new music would increase as well.

Guitar Kit Build Your Own

Truthfully, learning to play fast electric guitar isn’t a walk in the park, it’s not going to cost you your first-born child either. Learning this skill will involve smart strategies and hard work in order to improve upon better technique as your reflexes quicken. Here are some tips that can help that process develop.

1. Let your fingers curve around the guitar neck. If you’re looking for long-term results with good technique to play fast electric guitar, then you’ll want your fingers to create a nice curve around the neck. Attempting to let your palms flatten or your fingers to straighten will only make you go slower and stall your learning process. Have your fingers poised for action with that powerful curve that will allow for smoother and faster transitions between notes.

2. Have precision of where you push your fingers. When you’re not paying much attention to the quality of your skills on the electric guitar fret board, sloppy placement of your fingers will trip you up and slow you down. To keep buzzing noises from sounding when you play, keep your fingers closer to the fret markers. Overall, focus on letting your fingers fall into place on the frets before applying pressure in order to prevent some mistakes.

3. Keep your hand perpendicular to the guitar neck. Some guitar riffs that come around can surprise us and cause us to make quick adjustments that are not beneficial to the flow of the song. If you allow your wrists to curve around at an angle to compensate for a difficult lick, you might be slowing down your ability to make it to the next section. Keeping your wrist and hand perpendicular to the fret board will set you up to move more fluently from section to section.

4. Give your fingers a couple stretches. If you feel like your fingers are stiff and can’t perform as well as they should, loosen them up with some healthy stretches. Bend them back towards your wrist and let them sit for a few seconds. This will let them know that it’s time to play fast electric guitar.

5. Embrace awkward chords that are difficult to form. Some of the more difficult chords to play on guitar are the reason that guitarists get frustrated and give up, but you need to use those as an opportunity to develop. Take those difficult or awkward chords and practice them over and over in order for you fingers to get used to the constant strain and stretch on the frets.

When you first learned the guitar, you may have thought that it was simply fun, but learning to play fast electric guitar can give you possibilities in careers. Put these tips to some good use and start playing faster and more aggressive on the guitar.

Build & Burn

Build & Burn

$10.38

The Loved Ones could never be accused of being insincere, and you’d be even harder-pressed to make such a claim after listening to Build & Burn, the band’s sophomore release for Fat Wreck Chords. An honest desperation careens through every note and nook of the record, ensuring that even the predictable and slightly derivative nature of its songs doesn’t take away from how enjoyable the album is. Sure, almost anyone could play the uncomplicated chord progressions and straightforward melodies well, but only a select few could do it with as much heart as these Philly punks; the end result is a set of unforgivingly catchy songs that won’t get out of your head even when you want them to (see “Sarah’s Game” or “I Swear”). Build & Burn is an album about survival, a message that rings loudly through the Loved Ones’ stomping rhythms, throaty vocals, and ringing chords, not to mention the occasional piano tinkering and Southern-charmed flavoring. So whether it’s in cuts like the churning “Pretty Good Year” or the musingly acoustic “Brittle Heart,” the group performs with the underdog spirit of that kid perpetually knocked down on the playground who never fails to get back up again. Ten songs in just 30 minutes, Build & Burn is a quick listen in which the Loved Ones — with a little help from their friends in the Hold Steady and Bouncing Souls, among others — stick to what they do best, and produce a solid album of passionate pop-punk. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi Performers: Franz Nicolay – Saw, Harmonica, Accordion, Organ (Hammond), Organ, Piano; Bob Strakele – Vocals (Background); Buick Audra – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Pete Steinkopf – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Christopher Gonzalez – Bass, Guitar; Dave Hause – Guitar, Vocals; Dave Walsh – Guitar; Mike Sneeringer – Drums

Four years after the release of the tepid Old Friends, Guy Clark signed to the newly revitalized Elektra Asylum label seemingly dedicated to recording and marketing American roots music. Teaming once again with producer Miles Wilkinson, Clark delivered an ambitious, soulful, and state-of-the-art batch of songs. There is an all-star cast here, as per usual. Nonetheless Clark and Wilkinson solidified their vision, and here it works seamlessly, and virtually all of the musical arrangements and sounds serve the songs. Players and singers included Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Verlon Thompson, Foster & Lloyd, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Suzy Ragsdale, Brian Ahern, and drummer Kenny Malone. The opener, a light country shuffle flavored with the blues entitled “Baton Rouge,” is catchy in the same way that “Homegrown Tomatoes” was nine years earlier. The tile track, written with Thompson, is an intimate look at what goes on inside a man’s mind when he works with his hands and the universe he encounters there. Douglas’ slide guitar solo and the gorgeous Thompson harmonies deepen the impact. “Picasso’s Mandolin,” co-authored with Foster & Lloyd, is a lilting number with hand percussion, Bush’s mandolin playing sad and sweet, and three-part harmonies by Clark with Foster & Lloyd. What strikes the listener in the first five tracks is how spare everything is, no matter how many or few instruments are on a given cut. Wilkinson sculpts the sound around Clark’s stiletto fine lyrics. Perhaps this is best encountered on “Hey, Where’d You Get This Number.” It’s a humorous funky country tune with a quartet and no backing vocals, and Clark’s wit sizzles in the mix, full of cruelty and irony. But it also comes through in the tender and moving “I Don’t Love You Much Do I.” Stuart’s mandolin and Thompson’s guitar wind around one another, framing Clark’s creaking and elegant lyrics as he sings them in his usual slow, deliberate manner, getting every ounce of insight and emotion from the syllables. It took four more years to get another record out of Clark, but it’s a winner all the way around. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Bill Caswell – Jaw Harp, Jew’s-Harp; Jerry Douglas – Slide Guitar, Dobro; Kenny Malone – Snaps, Conga, Percussion, Drums; Lee Roy Parnell – Slide Guitar; Marty Stuart – Mandolin; Sam Bush – Mandolin; Bill Lloyd – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Vocals;

How to Build a Bobber on a Budget

How to Build a Bobber on a Budget

$15.48

In the old days all a person needed to build a killer custom motorcycle was a bike, a set of tools, a little know-how, and a creative vision. But with the rise of the high-dollar, haute moteur Gucci choppers, the true custom bike has gotten out of most riders’ reach, right? Dead wrong. In this book Jose de Miguel, a custom builder from way back, sets out to prove that those good old days never ended. In the clearest and simplest terms, he shows readers how they can turn odds and ends found around the shop into one-off motorcycle parts–and make a cheap, run-of-the mill custom build into a drop-dead show stopper. Following de Miguel’s lead, along with his straightforward illustrations, any resourceful owner with rudimentary mechanical skills, a basic tool kit, and–most importantly–a modicum of imagination can build the bobber of his dreams for less than the price of a new bike.

Love Can Build a Bridge

Love Can Build a Bridge

$7.18

The last Judds album may not be their strongest but nonetheless featured some killer tracks and is by no means unsuccessful when taken as a whole. There is plenty of merit here. With an opening track like “Born to Be Blue” that begins as an old swinging blues tune à la the 1930s and moves into a hot fusion of country and R&B, the album is off to a good start. There are a handful of Naomi Judd co-writes that feature everything from roots and progressive country to strutting, punchy rock & roll to heartbreaking ballads. The remake of Lawrence Hammond’s “John Deere Tractor” may not have be the best move to make, but then, it’s not bad either. “Calling in the Wind” sounds like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” at the beginning, but Wynonna dispels any of that quickly in the verse. “Rompin’ Stompin’ Bad News Blues” is a ferocious blues rocker with acoustic guitars roiling under the voice of Wynonna, who sings as loud as she growls, and guest star Bonnie Raitt’s greasy electric slide doesn’t hurt either. Ultimately, Love Can Build a Bridge is a fine sendoff for one of the most successful and revolutionary bands in country history. There is much pleasure here, and it is all in the way two voices weave, Wynonna’s command of her instrument, and Brent Maher’s production that accents all the strengths and leaves just enough weakness in the mix to make the band human. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Bonnie Raitt – Slide Guitar; Christ Church Choir – Choir, Chorus; Jack Williams – Bass (Electric); Mark Tanner – Cello; Sonny Garrish – Dobro, Pedal Steel, Guitar (Steel); Bobby Ogdin – Piano, Organ; Craig Bickhardt – Guitar (Acoustic); Don Potter – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Eddie Bayers

Let's Build a Roof

Let’s Build a Roof

$11.98

The indie pop collective from Portland known as LAKE released one of 2008′s most enjoyable records made by an indie pop collective with Oh, the Places We’ll Go. In fact, it was just plain enjoyable, filled with soulful jams and quietly happy tunes perfect for summertimes. The 2009 follow-up, Let’s Build a Roof, is less cheery and laid-back and more experimental and melancholy. The change isn’t drastic; it’s not like they’ve become Battles or signed to Tzadik. More like they’ve loosened up their songwriting some and added a few more instrumental colors to their playbook, more sonic twists and turns. The bandmembers still split songwriting and lead vocal duties, mainly between Eli Moore and Ashley Eriksson with help from Lindsay Schief, but they all seem to be on the same page stylistically. Maybe the best way to explain the stylistic shift is by looking at album artwork. On Places it was a cute and simple illustration, and the band’s sound matched that. Here, they sound like the kind of band that would have an embroidered-looking cover and paint it on what appears to be a headboard. And then take it out into an actual lake. An indie pop jam band, in other words. Pastoral chamber jam, that is, with off-kilter horn arrangements, thickly weaved production (courtesy of Karl Blau), and mysterious songs. Indeed, very few of the tracks this time out are as easy to follow and love as Places’ “Blue Ocean Blue” or its title track, but — and this is an important qualifier — they are as quietly effective if you give them a chance to sink. It’s easy to damn a record by calling it a grower, but Let’s Build a Roof truly does become better the more often you listen to it, as the melodies grow like vines and the richness of the sound begins to resonate fully. It’s an important step forward from a band who could have easily made the same record over and over, but instead chose to take some chances. This kind of artistic growth should be applauded, especially when the results are as interesting as they are on Let’s Build a Roof. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Ben Kapp – Shaker, Tambourine; Bill Kautz – Euphonium, Horn, Trumpet; Adam Forest Oelsner – Accordion, Choir, Chorus, Guitar (Electric), Trombone, Guitar, Bass, Synthesizer, Vocals; Adam Oelsner – Tambourine, Accordion, Guitar (Electric), Trombone, Keyboards, Vocals, Synthesizer, Bass, Guitar; April Schief – Choir, Chorus; Ben Kamen – Bells; Billy Piepenbrink -

How to Build a Lighthouse

How to Build a Lighthouse

$11.18

Since the demise of the Grapes of Wrath in 2001, co-leader Kevin Kane has kept a low musical profile, releasing only a solo acoustic album, Timmy Loved Judas Priest, that consisted entirely of covers. His third solo release overall, How to Build a Lighthouse is Kane’s first full-band album under his own name, with his own guitar and keyboards backed with bass, drums, and cello. The low-key arrangements keep Kane’s vocals front and center, and he’s in fine voice throughout: his wispy, breathy tenor has remained largely unchanged since the Grapes of Wrath’s chart heyday. As a result, the overdubbed self-harmonies on the excellent opening track, “Last to Know,” are sure to appeal to that breed of pop fans whose mental radios are permanently tunes to the 1970s AM band. Other highlights include the sparse, ghostly “Late Night,” which has more of a Big Star Third/Sister Lovers vibe, and the closest thing to a rocker on this low-key album, the New Pornographers-like power pop of “No Black Dots.” The oddly glammy, Redd Kross-style cover of Pink Floyd’s “Arnold Layne” is good for a laugh as well, though it’s strange that in three different places, the liner notes claim that “See Emily Play” is the song in question. Especially in the United States, where the Grapes of Wrath never broke beyond the college radio ghetto, it’s easy for an album like How to Build a Lighthouse to disappear without a trace, but this is an enjoyable singer/songwriter album with a lot of subtle but effective pop hooks. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Steven Drake – Vibraphone; Nelson Bragg – Drums

Let's Build Something to Break

Let’s Build Something to Break

$9.58

After Midnight Project’s debut offering of melodic, muscled, hard rock is hardly revolutionary, but it is better than it needs to be, boasting 11 tracks that find some sort of neutral territory between calm passion and grungy, open-armed melodrama. Let’s Build Something to Break is a rhythmic record, one in which guitar solos aren’t nearly as important as the interlocked thud of drums and bass. Flashes of piano and electronics are added to the mix, and “Gone Too Long” even flirts with symphonic accompaniment. Even so, this is a fairly lean album, polished to a spit-shine by John Feldmann — Goldfinger frontman and accomplished producer for the likes of Good Charlotte, the Used, and Atreyu — and largely focused on beefy, commercial would-be singles. Jason Evigan is an appropriate frontman for such music, delivering lines like “I’m gonna throw my fist in the air and erase you from my memory!” with a voice that alternates between theatrical grit, growls, and falsetto. This has all been done before, of course, but it’s still comforting to hear a band do it fairly well. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi Performers: Justin Rubinstein – Accordion; Amy Feldmann – Vocals; Andrew Clore – Vocals; Christian Paul Meadows – Guitar, Vocals; Dan Morris – Vocals; Danny Morris – Drums; Jason Evigan – Vocals, Guitar, Piano; Jess Meilson – Vocals; John Feldmann – Percussion, Vocals;
