6 More Cool Photoshop Effects for DIY Photo-Art Prints

Now that the word ‘Photoshop’ has become a verb (meaning: the process of lying through photograph) as well as a brand name, a lot of the discussion has been diverted from what the program can actually legitimately and ethically do! Today we check out some cool Photoshop effects to add to your photos before sending them for canvas printing, creating artistic, but certainly not dishonest, art prints!

Halftone dots and linear light

This is a gorgeous over-exposed, newspaper-ish look. It is also very simple to do! You just need to:

• Duplicate the photo in another layer
• Make your foreground colour white, and background black
• Select Filter > Sketch > Halftone Pattern. Play around to find settings you like
• Press Ctrl+I to invert the image
• In the Layers Palette change the mode from Normal to Linear Light
• All done!

Retro comic book look

This takes a little longer, but is an awesome effect for kid’s photos. Here’s how to create canvas prints that look like enlargements of comic books:

• Increase the overall contrast of the pic using your Levels toolbox
• Go to Filters>Artistic> Film Grain and play around with the settings to suit your picture and yourself.
• Duplicate the layer and name it ‘halftone’ or something you’ll recognise and understand!
• Go to Filter>Pixelate>Halftone. Set the max radius to 4, and leave the default values for the other options.
• Go to your Layers Pallette and choose Darken for the Blending Mode

This gives you a comic-book style picture, and you can use either Photoshop or another picture editor to add comic book style text boxes around your pic.

Backlit silhouettes

The picture in the example is a little clichéd, I realise – but if you can envision this effect with a silhouette of your kids walking against a sunset background, or yourself sitting under a tree, you have an awesome canvas art print idea in your mind! This is how you do it:

• Cut the image that you want to keep as a silhouette out from the background. If you’re a Photoshop newbie, you may need a separate tutorial for that part – there are a hundred different methods.
• Go to your Layers Palette and set blending options to Colour Overlay, and the colour itself to black. You now have a black silhouette on a white background
• Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Gradient. Choose the Radial option, and make sure the lighter colours are set towards the centre.
• Select your silhouette layer and got to Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All. Set the foreground colour to black and use a large, soft brush over the sides of the silhouette to turn them transparent.
• In the example you can see that a small piece of the original guitar has been added for depth. You can do this with a face in your picture if you like – cut your piece out, and go to Image>Adjustments> Desaturate. Set the blending mode to Multiply, and opacity to 60-70%. Use a very soft eraser to soften the edges of the new layer if you like
• Copy your silhouette layer, and change the overlay colour (in Bending Options_ to white. Go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur, and set 3-4 pixels.

Photoshop has so much potential for creating your own art, and it takes very little knowledge … and just a tiny bit of imagination to create beautiful canvas art prints!

Ghost on the Canvas $11.87 Few artists get the luxury of crafting their final album as a conscious farewell, but Glen Campbell isn’t just any artist. Campbell is a titan with a legacy that begins before he started to record solo albums, so if anyone deserves to craft a career-capping final record it is he, even if this opportunity is bittersweet, tainted by the knowledge that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s sometime during its recording. His disease does hang over Ghost on the Canvas, its sadness surfacing on the instrumental interstitials written by Roger Manning, but this album bears none of the ghoulish fetishization of death that haunts Rick Rubin’s latter-day productions of Johnny Cash. No, producer Julian Raymond has crafted Ghost on the Canvas as a specific sequel to the very good 2008 Meet Glen Campbell, which consciously re-created Campbell’s golden decade of 1967-1977 through newly written songs and covers of modern rockers. Raymond uses the same formula here, finding tunes by Manning, Paul Westerberg (the title track), Jakob Dylan (“Nothing But the Whole Wide World”), Robert Pollard (“Hold on Hope”), and Teddy Thompson (“In My Arms”), then crafting sturdy originals with Campbell, all evoking such luxuriant dramatic classics as “Wichita Lineman” without succumbing under self-conscious weight. It’s a delicate trick that, apart from those too elegiac instrumentals, never once seems forced, a testament to Raymond’s skills as a producer and Campbell’s as a musician and singer. Oil on Canvas $38.39 The final Japan release was sold and marketed as a live album, though actually it’s a bit of a catchall — it is indeed mostly from concerts, but also includes a variety of studio instrumentals and a re-recorded version of “Nightporter” mixed in to sound like it’s part of the show. The various re-releases of the albums over the years confused matters further, with re-sequencings, the excision of cuts, and more adding to general confusion about the release (not to mention the fact that some reissues completely omitted where the shows were recorded anyway!). Two of the instrumentals, “Oil on Canvas” itself and “Temple of Dawn,” are brief, gentle pieces by Sylvian and Barbieri respectively. “Voices Raised in Welcome, Hands Held in Prayer” is a more involving effort, combining a quiet, gamelan-inspired rhythm with found-sound samples from what appears to be a religious ceremony. As for “Nightporter,” it’s a nice enough new version but isn’t notably different or varied from the earlier studio take. The remaining live cuts show that the exquisite tension and serene sounds in the studio were easily transferred to the stage in all their elegant complexity. The Tin Drum selections, which make up most of the release, make the case even more that Japan was as much a prog band as a glam one, Sylvian’s captivating vocals flowing over Asian-derived scales and melodies, the guitar parts handled by guest performer Masami Tsuchiya, who also plays some keyboards. “Visions of China” sounds especially grand, Jansen’s entrancing drumming seemingly impossible to be created and yet clearly existing.
